Would you like your hiker toasted?

Ok. Imagine you are ordering a sub at Quizno’s. You get your meat and cheese and veggies picked out, and then the purveyor of your sandwich puts it on the conveyor belt and you watch it creep, inch by inch, through the broiling oven. You walk to the far end and watch your delicious sandwich as the cheese melts and bubbles, and the bread gets all toasty, and it all moves at a painfully slow pace.

Walking today was kind of like that. Kait and I cooked and sizzled 17 miles to a campground outside of Bloomfield, with the sun bearing down from above and the blacktop charbroiling us from below. I have never sweated so much in my life. I must be acclimating to the heat, though. My body is learning how to manage and mitigate the cooking process so I don’t burst into flames.

At least we can take comfort in the fact that there are still working pay phones. In Amish country.

Please don’t fry your brains- literally! Be careful…

That is not a phone booth, it is a time machine- be careful playing around those things. 😉 ~L

I could send you some large containers of Gatorade powder I used for the field hockey and lacrosse teams’ hydration…they can be hard to find and now that you have a vehicle weight is not such an issue. Used to be available in red, blue, orange and green; the athletes preferred a mix of green and blue 🙂 I think they make 2.5 gallons each container, but you can measure out smaller quantities. I am remembering 2 containers per 5 gallon field jug. Love you guys!!!!

  4. Oooh! Vivid description of your plight! Please stay hydrated and be careful! I don’t want to read about you or Kait keeling over from heat stroke.

When I was a long haul trucker, I drove all over the mid-west. Corn is king, and while novel at first, it gets tiresome after a while. 🙂

That all said, enjoy Iowa! You guys are making good time. You’ll be across the continent before you know it!

Kait, you have good taste in both men and colleges…GO BOBCATS!
